The Prevention Division offers a variety of educational activities to inform the public about fire prevention and life safety initiatives. These programs are offered to citizens of all ages. Public Educators are available to present at schools, community events, homeowners associations, etc.
Community Programs
Fire Station Tours
Station tours must be scheduled in advance. Firefighters assigned to the station of choice will walk the group through the facility explaining all the aspects of life at the firehouse, including a truck demonstration. Station tours are available to anyone who is interested. Tours are available between the hours of 9 a.m and 4 p.m. Tours last anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour.
Fire Truck Display
This consists of units that are in service. Arrival times may vary if units are diverted to an emergency call. Have an alternate day ready. Trucks show up with firefighters on duty. The compartments on the units are opened up to display the equipment that is used on fire or traffic crash scenes. The personnel on duty will talk about some of the equipment and explain what it is used for.
Community Event Display
An in-service fire station crew and engine or med unit will visit events sponsored by a nonprofit organization, a school, or a neighborhood association. If a fire crew attends your event, they will typically remain “in service” and stage the apparatus somewhere that allows them to leave quickly if they are dispatched to an emergency. Responding to an emergency may cause the crew to be late to the event, to have to leave abruptly, or in some cases, to not show up at all.
School Safety Event
This event is scheduled at least a month in advance. Public education personnel and firefighters on duty will arrive as close to scheduled time as possible. This usually consists of someone speaking about different ways to stay safe and not start fires and if a fire starts how you can put it out safely or call 911. Usually there will be some kind of literature that is handed out at the events.
